HOT FACE

Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to Idiot Win, the panel show podcast that celebrates the world of idiocy. It's made by Idiots for Idiots. So that's all of us in this room. All of you listening, we're all idiots. First, sitting to my right, I'm going to introduce the delightful Danny O'Hara. Hello, Danny. Hello. How are you? I'm good, thank you. How have you been? Tell us a list, give us a list of things that you've been up to. Right, so, ah, this is awkward. Can I tell you something I've learned? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, I have learned that pigeons will eat gooseberries before they become proper big old gooseberries. But then they'll become proper big old pigeons. Yeah, but that doesn't help if you want to make a gooseberry crumble. But pop a pigeon in it. That's another thing, isn't it? A pigeon pie.

Pigeon pie with gooseberries already in it. Pigeon and gooseberry pie. It's Becky. Hello, Becky. Hello. Excited to have you here. I'm delighted to welcome Steve Keyworth. Hello. How are you doing? I'm good. I'm not very good with the sun, actually, so I will keep away from these two. It is incredibly sunny here at the minute. I pink right up. Do you? Yeah. Okay, you don't go a lovely bronze. No, no, no. Sort of a pink to lobster. Pink to lobster. Have you got any thoughts? We're sort of running behind hands, so it's perfectly fine if you don't. Well, I've got this new thing where I've decided to stop earning money. And how's that going? It's going really well, yeah. And it wasn't even, you know, just my decision, to be fair. But everyone else helping me with it, so that's good.

I've been doing this for years, so it's nice to have you amongst the ranks. Okay, brilliant. So we've got a room full of poor people and a load of microphones and cameras that don't work. There's only one thing to do, and that is say hello. Lovely to see you. How are you doing? Hello. I am doing wonderfully, thank you. That's good. It's nice to be out of a cold storage cellar. Okay, so we are going to go straight on with round one. And round one is called What the Fuck?

Today's episode is themed on food and drink. Yes, that's right. I like to eat and I like to drink. Meant to talk to you all about food and drink in your opens, but that's fine. It doesn't matter. So round one is What the Fuck? I have got a series of news stories and questions on things that have happened in the world of food and drink. Okay, so eyes down for question one. When Reid Harris of Farmington, New Mexico, wanted to propose to his girlfriend, he decided to do it in a novel way. They were both fans of the popular burger joint, Wendy's, and so he decided to put the engagement ring in his partner's Frosty, which is a frozen dairy dessert. Think of it like a sweet sludgy soup. How did this pan out for him? Can I just... Steve?

He married the dessert. Well, she married the dessert. She married the dessert. She didn't marry the dessert.

Actually, we don't use buzzers for this round.

But we'll do it later. Can I ask if that's an official description of a Frosty, what you just said? No, it's not at all. I imagined it was like a McFlurry and then I saw a picture of it and it's like a beige soup. I'll spit some ice cream. I think she punched him. That sounds awful. Yeah. I'm going to go Occam's razor here. I think she said yes, they got married, lived happily ever after. Do you know what? That could quite possibly have happened. I don't know. I have a feeling that he put it in the ice cream. The ice cream got contaminated and then they got ill and then they sued Wendy's. Sorry, say that again. I had trouble listening. I don't know why. I drifted off as soon as she started talking. Sorry, say that again. Right.

I see how it's going to go today. No, no, no. It's my fault. So is it possible that he put it in and then it contaminated that sludge that we are talking and then she got ill after and then she did say yes, though, but she got ill and then they ended up suing Wendy's. Oh, it's certainly possible, but it's not what happened. Okay. Any other thoughts? They actually found Occam's razor in the dessert and she lost her useful wedding finger. So that was sad. She cut her finger off on Occam's razor? Yeah, absolutely. No one saw it coming. It's going to happen. It has to happen. What is Occam's raisin? The most obvious answer is the right one. The most obvious thing is going to happen. But why is it called Occam's raisin? Oh. It's not raisin. Occam's raisin's the, that's a Ben and Jerry's flavour. That's a different thing. The most obvious flavour.

Bought some hot cross buns the other day full of Occam's raisins. Disgusting. Did you know that plum pudding has never contained plums and it was always referring to raisins? They used to call all dried fruit plums. Wow. Wow. Isn't this a round later on, Chris? Shit. Yes. Occam's a razor, like, shave. Oh, razor. But who's Occam, then? Some philosopher or some shit. Oh, Jeff Occam. Yeah. You know, Jeff Occam lives number 53. Can't say that, Jeff Occam. Jeff Occam. Jeff Occam. Should have gone for Ian Occam. Got picked on a lot at school. Oh, bless Jeff Occam. Yeah. Jeff Occam.

Okay. Any guesses at what it actually was? It's such a naff thing to do. Yeah. Is that what she said? Is that a quote from his fiance? His fiance was just like, this is just tacky. Yeah. Because you know what? Especially, we don't know when this was, but like these days, some people would be like, no, no, no. Like if everybody in the burger joint suddenly started running in and dancing and singing. Yeah. Like a flash mob. Flash mob. Yeah. Where's the flash mob? So anyway, any final guesses? She choked on it. She ate the ring, Steve. I'll give you that. But with the help of prunes, it was all well in the end. Or plums, as the Victorians would say. So she had to poop that ring out and then forever know the ring and he pooped. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I mean, he proposed to her in a Wendy's. It probably cost him about $20. Yeah. It's probably made of tinfoil or something. I was thinking you were going to say. It's like it didn't dissolve in her gastric acid. She'll probably poop quite quickly. Okay. Let's move on to question two. Can I just stop you there? Do you poop in the toilet or do you poop on a toilet paper if you're going to constantly look for the ring? Because you've got to put your hand in there and get it. That's a very good point. Like when we've had to get fish stuff out of the dog. You remember when the dog ate all of those balloons and we knew exactly how many and I had to count them when they came out? An oven dish.

Question two. What was unusual about a funeral in Osineca, Michigan in 1793? The deceased attended the funeral. He wanted to make sure they did it right. So then at the end he was like, yep, jolly good, everyone. I can die happy now. Oh, so it was like a dry run? No, it was the only run. He was like, I don't trust you to do this when I'm not here. He was dead. He was a bit of a control freak. He was dead? He was dead or alive? He was alive when he attended the funeral. Okay. And then there was another one. Did he have another one when he died? No. You tell me. You've got the answers. Good point. It's a good answer. I thought it was just a shock that there was a funeral because famously everyone in Michigan is immortal. Is that right? Yeah, it is. Yeah, yeah.

And they say if you're tired of Michigan, you're tired of life. So that's essentially why, how people go, they leave Michigan. Have you taken a job with the Michigan Tourist Board? No, they wouldn't give me a job. Oh, bastards. I was interested because it's 1793.

That's a long time ago, but not, you know, in American history. And I was thinking of Michigan. Not long after the old chap, Hamilton, who we saw the dancing about.

Do you mean, yeah. It's not known for his dancing, Hamilton, really, is it? Although they do do very good choreography on a revolving stage. It is known for his dancing. It's more known for his rapping, isn't it? Yeah. And historical story. Is that interesting? Historical story. What was unusual about it? I just wondered if it was for a goat.

It was worth it. It was worth the wait. It's as good a guess as any. Well, yeah. Do you mean the animal, the goat, or the popular parlance, goat, the greatest of all time? Oh, interesting. Both. Both, I think. The greatest goat of all time. Good goat. Greatest goat of all time. That's in Wales, isn't it? That's in Wales, isn't it? Good goat.

Oh, he's so full. That was good. That was Radio 4 worthy. You're in the wrong fucking room, mate. Anything else? Any other thoughts? Well, I thought it might have been, there were several undertakers in this town, and there was a kind of price war thing. They did a, there was like start of a two for one, and it escalated four for one, and it got to, this particular funeral, they buried 17 people for the price of one, and that's where they decided it was getting silly. Interesting. Maybe half a point, depending on how Matthew's feeling. Any other thoughts? Was there an outbreak of something at this time in history? There was. Sort of. Oh. But not really. Oh. But sort of. Someone had a cold, I think is what we're saying. Yeah. Yeah, because I think masquerades, oh, are quite common, aren't they? You know.

Because like, anyway, I just thought that. Yeah. Okay. Well, I'll tell you. It was, no, no, I won't tell you. I always, well, I won't. Did they bury everybody in that town? Is that? Well, it wasn't a funeral for people. It was a funeral for 30,000 pizzas. No. The FDA contacted, did the FDA exist in 1793? Did pizzas exist in 1793? Pizzas? Well, I guess if it's. No, no. It's 1973. Fuck's sake.

Sorry, it was 1973. Does that change anyone's answer? This stuff just doesn't get picked up on the spell check. You know, it trusts you. It doesn't know. It's nowhere near Hamilton. It's closer to Lewis Hamilton than Alexander Hamilton. So really, goat wasn't, you know, could actually, it's a non-human. Yeah, it's 30,000 pizzas. The FDA contacted Mario Fabrini, a local pizza manufacturer and owner of Papa Fabrini's pizzas, about a widespread recall of canned mushrooms. Fabrini submitted samples of his frozen pizzas to the FDA for testing. When two mice died after consuming them, he was ordered to recall more than 30,000 pizzas.

On March the 5th, 1973, 29,188 frozen pizzas were dumped into an 18-foot hole at a farm in Michigan. The governor delivered the moving eulogy, and once the pizzas had been given a final resting place, Fabrini reportedly laid two coloured garlands on the burial site, red gladioli to represent the pizza sauce, and white carnations to represent the cheese. I like this guy. He sounds like a dramatic bitch. Sounds like something I would do. But this, however, wasn't the end of the story. What happened next? The pizzas came back to life and terrorised the town. Tremors.

Well, tomato plants obviously grew. Good point. Yeah, good point. Doesn't sound like a stable foundation for anything. I think it creates some kind of pizza swamp where somebody walks and they went, ah, quicksand. Sinkhole that is not so bad because you've got pepperoni when you get down there. It's a bit like, and I mean, it's probably not, but it's a bit like in the First World War and the poppy fields were all drenched in blood, and now what we've got is, I mean, it's not really, is it, but image-wise you've got a... Equally as sad, probably. Yeah. No, I wouldn't go as far as that. I was just highlighting the image of the tomato.

I don't know why people can just pick the mushrooms off, because that's what my daughter does. I mean, you know, that would work. They were diseased mushrooms. Yeah. They would have contaminated the rest of the pizza. What about, would you check her fingers that she'd washed them after? Or would you just be like, wow. She's... You are the reason that COVID was as bad as it was. It'll be fine. Just pick the facts. No one knows about that bit. Oh, okay. No, actually, what happened was, as it turned out, the FDA findings were incorrect. The mushrooms did not have botulism. The lab mice that died, died of an unrelated infection. Fabrini, however, went on to sue, and he recovered $211,000. Good for him. Yeah. Damn right. Okay, question three.

Mary Grams had proudly worn her engagement ring since her husband, Norman, popped the question in 1951. Unfortunately, while Grams was doing some weeding on the family farm in Alberta, Canada, in 2004, she lost the ring. Despite searching high and low, Grams never found the ring and never told her husband about the wedding mishap. Instead, buying a cheap replacement. What surprising thing happened in 2017? That was a long question. Did the ring end up in a Wendy's? Whatever it was called, the slushy, yeah. It did not. I mean, I think it's quite obvious that it grew, and it grew, and it grew, and it grew, and it grew.

And then eventually, her ancestors, well, you know, her grandchildren, climbed up that stalk.

There was a giant wearing the ring? Yeah. There was a giant wearing the ring. No, it's not that. Did she come clean after a while, and he was really angry and divorced her? No, he died. He died. Oh, he died. He died. I think he died, and then she read his will, and in that was the ring, and he went, ha, ha, gotcha. Because that's the kind of thing I'd do. This is what you get for being careless. I think I know the answer to this one. Okay. I think a carrot grew into the ring, and then she had to marry the carrot. Oh, it's going so well in the end. But yes, points for Becky. That's quite right.

In 2017, 13, 14, 13 years later, Graham's daughter-in-law, Colleen Daly, who lives on the farm where Graham once lived, harvested some vegetables from the garden. It wasn't until Daly was washing a lumpy carrot she'd originally planned to feed to her dog. What? That she spotted a ring pinched tightly around the carrot, which Graham's son immediately identified. It grew inside the carrot. They planted carrots, and it absorbed the ring, and it grew, and it's in a carrot. Well, it didn't grow, though, did it? No. The carrot grew around the ring, really. No, that would be ridiculous. And that was your answer.

Well, it wasn't a very expensive ring, though, was it? If it was just one carrot, that's... This is lovely stuff. Okay, let's move on to the final question of round one. In 2018, Heinz launched a mayo chup, a saucy combination of ketchup and mayonnaise in the United States. However, when the combination was introduced to Canadian consumers a year later, why did this cause a problem for some people in this new market? Mayo chup is actually an ancient Canadian word, and it's sort of a mild insult. It's like the equivalent of calling someone a knobhead. Oh, no, have I accidentally got it right? We'll come back to that. Anyone else got any thoughts before we give Becky points?

Did they just say, no, that thousand island dressing? That's a good point. Yeah, yeah. No, I really just thought the Canadians thought it was gross, or, like Becky, thought it's going to mean bum or something. I was trying to get in on Becky's points, are you? Well, no, but, I mean, there is an indigenous people in Canada. And there's also French Canadians, and I don't know. The phrase I used was ancient Canadian. It didn't occur to me that there were ancient people in Canada before the Canadians arrived. Yeah. Well, I'll leave Matthew to work out the points. It is, in fact, the North American indigenous peoples, the Cree, and in their language, mayo chup, means shit is on my face. So that was amazing.

Which is what I think it would taste like to have those two things together, but I'm not a ketchup fan. I like ketchup and mayo sauce. I love, yeah, I like them both. I used to mix them together and put them, it's more or less interesting. It's interesting. But you all assumed it was called Ketchenaise instead of mayo chup. I called it shit on my face. Okay, at the end of round one, let's go to Matty Corner and see what the scores are. Well, I've given Danny half a point for making half an answer. Steve has one and a half, but rolling out in front with two is Becky. Whee! All right, it's time for round two, which is a la carnage.

Where's my carrots? Where's my pissing carrots? In this round, the players are going to work together as one chef and word at a time. They are going to recite some lovely, delicious recipes. Matty was going to work out which chef gave the best contribution and award points accordingly. So let's now enter the restaurant.
